Recently more and more health care professionals come to the conclusion that stress can seriously affect human's health. More than 60% of all visits to doctors are considered to be provoked by stress as the basic reason for the complaints; stress is considered to be a stronger risk factor for death compared to smoking.
Unfortunately stress is not a disease in the sense of modern medicine - it is not caused by a virus or bacteria and doctors can not just prescribe an antibiotic and solve the problem. As contrasted with antibiotics which heal infections, the psychotropic drugs fail to cure chronic stress at the end of the day. Their effects cease once the patient stops taking them in most of the cases.
So, how does stress affect health?
Stress affects health by provoking self destruction processes in the human body. Yes, this exactly means that stress makes us disregard the main vital processes in our body and this way slowly kill ourselves. Of course this is not a conscious process. It is controlled by the so called autonomic nervous system, which is responsible of all involuntary functions of our body.
Practically this happens because when we are stressed for a long period of time the balance between the two branches of the autonomic nervous system - the sympathic and parasympathic nervous systems, is distorted.
In case of stress we need energy to fight or run away as soon and as quick as possible. It is as simple as this! And through the sympathic nervous system we and nobody else give orders to our endocrine glands to produce specific hormones (adrenaline, noradrenalin, cortizol, glucocorticoids...) with the only purpose to SUPPRESS and POSTPONE all vital processes (such as digestion for instance) in order to ensure immediate availability of energy.
The normal sequel is that through the parasymathic nervous system the level of the above mentioned hormones is decreased, our body is given a deserved rest and all vital processes are reactivated.
This is a process which kept us alive since ancient times. Everything looks perfect and would be great unless nowadays the tendency was for quite long lasting stress periods, which means long lasting periods of vital processes suppression. For many of us the diagnosis would even be constant or chronic stress...
And if you think about it, while in the past this process was of life importance, today our life is not directly threatened. Why then to worry so much and provoke such dramatic changes in our body?
